A radiologist is a physician who has graduated medical school and obtained advanced training using x-rays (radiographs, CT), sound waves (ultrasound) or magnetic fields to capture and interpret medical images (MRI). Radiologists who are board-certified are licensed by the American Board of Radiology to practice in the field.
Types of Radiology
Interventional Radiology
Interventional Radiology is the practice of patient imaging, diagnosis and treatment using minimally invasive interventional techniques. This involves blood vessel imaging and care (such as angiography, angioplasty and stent placement), biopsy procedures, placement of lines and tubes, uterine fibroid removal, and drainage of fluids and abscesses. These may be performed with imaging guidance using x-rays, fluoroscopy, CT (computed tomography or CAT), Ultrasound or MRI.
Musculoskeletal Radiology
Musculoskeletal Radiology is a subspecialty devoted to the diagnostic imaging and diagnosis of the muscles and the skeleton. This includes x-rays, CT (computed tomography or CAT), Ultrasound and MRI.
Neuroradiology
Neuroradiology is the radiology subspecialty devoted to the diagnostic imaging and diagnosis of the brain and nervous system, head, neck and spine. This includes x-rays, CT (computed tomography or CAT), Ultrasound and MRI.
Breast Imaging
Breast Imaging is the radiology subspecialty devoted to the diagnostic imaging and diagnosis of breast diseases and conditions. This includes mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and breast procedures such as breast biopsy.
